A trip to Semenyih

An Unexpected Adventure

I was doing my usual stuff of playing games and not studying until all of a sudden it was time for our social engagement briefing. During the briefing, I got to know that I had to do the 'Program Anak Angkat' at semenyih alongside my other groupmates whom I'm not really familier with. This program requires us to visit the people of the village and spend the night with them while experiencing their daily cultures. Sounds interesting right? I thought it was gonna be an event that would just take away my precious weekends. Well, I spoke too soon. It was more like a new adventure for me.

Like usual we had to plan out the program meticulously. After discussing with the other groups which were also carrying out this program, we decided to head over to the village on the 30th March, a week before our mid-semester break. As usual, we had bought a few souvenirs beforehand.

First Day (30 March 2019)
Just a few words by our leader before departure

Upon arrival, we were given a warm welcome by the head of the village at the 'Balai raya' of the village. They shared a few a historical moments about the village and what they actually do throughout each day. Plantations are one of their core source of income. Speaking of plantations, that was our first destination, to see their sugar cane field right upfront. Well the journey isn't like what you would expect.
The boys from all the other groups

We got to ride a lorry, and whats more exciting, the road was not tarred, it was just red dirt, making the journey was bumpier than riding a rollercoaster. It was tonnes of fun

Greens and Greys

Here is the cane plantation. Seems tall right? well its actually a little less tall than our stomach, for the average malaysian men height at least. The field owner said that this attempt of producing a fertile field of sugar canes was actually his first. He admitted that it was a failure but hey, failure is the first step to success right?

Later on that day, we went to the 'Lebah Kelulut'(stingless bee) hive. It was the first time seeing one for most of our group members, including me. We hesitated to approach the hive at first but the bees didn't sting like the usual bees. We got to have a taste of fresh honey and to my surprise, some of it was sweet and some were actually sour. Here is what the hive looks like ,

After the visit, we headed back to the home of a village residence in which we were going to have a BBQ that night.

A bumpy ride back

Again with the fun rides. We started preparing from 6pm up till 8pm and it was really tiring! After finishing, it was dinner time! Finally, we got to enjoy the luscious taste of the BBQ chicken with the villagers and our friends. It was well worth our weekend.

On the next day, it was time for the most awaited activty, Water Rafting! The villagers briefed us a bit on this activity and how they were planning to make this one of the main tourist attractions one day. It was certainly entertaining enough for me.

Transporting the raft

There were two trips of rafting, the first one was upstream up until the checkpoint where we had breakfast. The second one, which i joined was downstream, a more challenging path compared to the previous one. I actually fell into the river but thankfully it wasn't that deep. i was soaking wet but it didn't matter because i felt really thrilled about it.
Post rafting scene

After the water rafting activity, we had lunch after a really tiring but fun activity. After that, we went to few houses to give out household needs to them. Some of the items were rice, biscuits, detergents etc. Giving out the necessities to the villagers was a really fulfilling experience for us as this reminds us that we should always give back to other people no matter small or big. Although we did not give much to the villagers, they were really happy upon receiving our small gift to them and they welcomed us really well into their homes. I had a really great time having some conversations with the villagers that we visited.

Finally, it was time to bid farewell to these wonderful villagers. It was certainly a pleasure to spend the weekend here in Kampung Rinching Hilir. I felt like Two days wasn't enough for me. But, all good things must come to an end.  I wish the villagers prosperous health and brilliant wealth for their kindness toward us. I would personally like to thank all the villagers, my groupmates and also Dr Marizan for lending me this opportunity to explore the outskirts of the city. I hope we can indulge in this amazing adventure once more.
