The Kampung Hilir Experience

"The experience of a lifetime"

I have never experience a 'kampung life' before as I spent most of the time in the big city. The only time that I experience it is during the 'Hari Raya'. Howerver, I think that experience is not qualified to be call a ' kampung life'. I am taking Social Engagement as a University Subject this semester where I was giving the opportunity to go and experience the 'kampung life' in Semenyih.

I was in a group of 11 student who were very outgoing and enthusiastic. There were about 22 groups made out of 2nd and 3rd year Electrical Engineering students in this subject. All of the groups were given the freedom to choose a project for their group. As soon as we saw the project to Semenyih, all of us had the same idea to go there. There were also 3 other groups that choose the project as well.

First Day(30 March 2019)

We gather at block Y of the Engineering faculty at around 9:00 am. There we were assign to a driver, student who brought their car, to go travel together. Each car will consists of 5 students. The journey to Semenyih took about 45 mins. At Kampung Rinching Hilir, we were gather in the village hall for a refreshment and also brief for the activity during our stay. The village leader or 'Ketua Kampung' were the one who planned out our activity for 2 days 1 night.

After the briefing, we had our lunch in the hall which were prepared by the village chef. It was delicious as it was a 'kampung' style dish. We rarely get to taste the kind of food here in the city.
Then, we were given a few hours to unpacked our luggage in our homestay. After zuhur, we went to a sugar cane farm by riding a pickup truck. It was the most memorable journey.

After the visit to the sugar cane farm, we went to see the Bahoney Bee Farm. It bees produces honey like normal bees but instead of nectar it uses fruits. It got a sour taste to it and a tinge of sweetness at the end. We get to see the hive on the inside were the honey is collected.

Later that day, we prepared for a barbeque that in Cikgu Mazlee house. The ingredient were already been bought by the people. The only thing to be done is to prepared the food and also set up the tables.

Dinner starts at 9.00 pm as it took much time to grill all the chickens. We took the meal with the villagers while we chatting with them. As expected, all the chickens was so delicious even though they was done with us. Haha. Never thought to be that good.

Second Day (31 March 2019)
On the second day, we started our activities at 8.00 am with some aerobics so that we could warm up our bodies for the next activity. Then, we have our breakfast which is Nasi Lemak and 'Teh Tarik' served by the villagers there. After breakfast, we divided into our groups, one group will go to water rafting, while the other group went for 'gotong royong' area the Semenyih River. Everyone was so excited with the water rafting since many of us never experience to be in water rafting at the river. To be honest, water rafting activity was the best activity we done there. All of us was so happy and enjoy to be on the raft, even on the half way we went, one of the raft broke into half. Haha. Everyone was so struggle back then to fix the raft. After all, the activity was the most exciting we ever had.

Then, we went back to our homestay and have our rest. After that, we have our lunch before our next activity. Our next activity is visiting oldforks' house. We prepared to give some of needs for them while we visiting them. Before we started our visit, my group leader divided all of us into 3 groups. Each of the group visited 3 houses around the village. The villagers are so happy to see us. We chatted with them and get to know much about them at that time. It was the new experience for me since it was the first time I joined this activity. I also learned a lot from the activity, no matter how hard we live through, life must go on and be strong no matter what our condition are in.

After that, we finished all the activities at the Kampung Rinching Hilir and we continue with the closing ceremony. We gifted all the villagers involved some souvenirs from UM so that they will remember us and also acknowledged them for welcoming us to the village.

The only thing that I regret on the trip is that this adventure was too short. 2 days 1 night is not enough but it is really the experience of a lifetime.
